(10/26/94) -- Union County Sheriff's deputies were looking for a man who carjacked a woman's Mazda Protege with her two small children in it late Tuesday night.
Susan Vaughan Smith was heading east on Highway 49 when she stopped at a red light at Monarch Mills about 9:15 p.m., and a man jumped into the passenger seat, said Hugh Munn, spokesman for the State Law Enforcement Division.
The man forced her to drive off at gunpoint, Munn said. She was able to get out about 3 miles to 4 miles down the road and reported the incident to police. Her 3-year-old and 14-month-old children were still in the car, Munn said. It is unclear how the mother escaped, Munn said.
Late Tuesday night, the carjacker was headed toward York or Chester counties in the woman's 1990 burgundy Mazda Protege, Munn said. The license plate in GBK 167.
The driver is described as a black male in his late 20s to early 30s, wearing a plaid shirt, jeans and a toboggan-type hat.
